Studio Tour first: the one ride you can only do here

The soul of Universal Studios Hollywood isn't a flashy coaster — it's the Studio Tour. A roughly 45–60 minute tram ride through the working backlot where films and TV are actually shot, it's the one attraction unique to Hollywood: you won't find it in Osaka, Orlando, or Singapore. King Kong 360 3D, Jurassic World, the Fast & Furious segment, Jaws, the Earthquake set — it explains in one loop why Universal was born in LA. Half day or full day, this is the one thing you have to ride.

The key is timing. Trams leave every 15–30 minutes and the loop is long, so the queue grows as the day goes on. Head straight for the Studio Tour station at the back of the Upper Lot the moment you enter — that's the start of the half-day route.

The half-day route: start in the Upper Lot, drop to the Lower Lot

Hollywood is split into two levels — the Upper Lot and the Lower Lot — joined by a long set of escalators called the StarWay. Going down is quick; coming back up takes a few minutes, so do the Lower Lot in one batch and ride everything before heading back up.

A route that works:

  1. 1Studio Tour (back of the Upper Lot) — first thing at opening.
  2. 2Super Nintendo World · Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge — entry may use a virtual line, so grab a return time as soon as you arrive.
  3. 3Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey — the headline ride inside Hogwarts Castle.
  4. 4Clear the Lower Lot in one go — Jurassic World - The Ride, Revenge of the Mummy, Transformers: The Ride 3D. In summer 2026 a new coaster, Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift, opens in this area too.

Half day or full day — the crowd level decides

The date makes this call for you. On a quiet weekday, the headliners run 10–20 minute waits, so half a day (4–5 hours) covers all five above. Run the real crowd scores and August 19 (Wed) is the calmest of the summer at a crowd score of 13 (very quiet) and an 11-minute average wait; July 29 (Wed) sits at 22 (quiet), 20 minutes. Midweek Wednesdays and Thursdays generally land between 13 and 24.

By contrast, weekends and holidays stretch the same route past a full day. Saturday, August 1 hits 66 (a bit busy) and a 59-minute average; Independence Day, Saturday July 4, spikes to 86 (crowded) and 78 minutes. On days like that you'll manage two or three rides in half a day, so add a Universal Express Pass to a full-day ticket — or simply move your date. Check which days are calm by score on the Hollywood calendar.

Even tighter on time? This priority order

LA trips usually pair Universal with the Hollywood Sign, Griffith Observatory, or Santa Monica, so even half a day can feel tight. With only 2–3 hours, trim in this order:

  1. 1Studio Tour — non-negotiable; you can only ride it here.
  2. 2Super Nintendo World / Mario Kart — the queue that grows fastest, so go early.
  3. 3Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey — the Wizarding World atmosphere is a bonus.
  4. 4(If time is left) the Lower Lot thrill rides — the first to drop when you're rushed.

With just a park ticket you can also wander the Upper Lot promenade and the free CityWalk, which makes this a solid half-day plan for a jet-lagged first day in LA.

In one line

At Hollywood, anchor on the Studio Tour and walk the Upper Lot → Lower Lot in one direction and half a day is plenty — but only on a quiet weekday. The best is August 19 (13, 11 min), with July 29 (22, 20 min) as backup. Check the crowd score for your travel date on the Hollywood calendar.
